Mary Lynch-Ellerington is officially retiring after more than 50 years of changing the world of neurological physiotherapy. She has spent her life empowering patients recovery, and therapists learning. As a world-famous Bobath Tutor and leader, she leaves behind a legacy that will inspire therapists for generations.
A Brilliant Career in Neurological Rehabilitation
Mary started her professional physiotherapy journey in 1973. She graduated from the Bradford School of Physiotherapy and started her career at the Walton Centre, Liverpool, where she led the physiotherapy team on the Stroke Rehabilitation Unit. Then in 1979 she was invited to work with Mrs Berta and Dr Karel Bobath at the Bobath Centre in London, in 1979.
This experience changed her life and her career path forever.
1980: Qualified as a Basic Bobath Course Instructor.
1984: Became a Senior Instructor for the International Bobath Instructors Training Association (IBITA).
1985: Founded the British Bobath Tutors Association (BBTA) to establish official training for adult Bobath tutors.
For over 40 years, Mary has travelled across the globe to teach, with her constant drive being to develop the potential of the patient and the therapist. She has worked in her own practice, the ’International Therapy Centre’ in York for many years, building a world-renowned reputation.
She has taught introductory courses, Basic Bobath Courses, Advanced courses and advanced bespoke masterclasses all around the world. Her courses have helped thousands of therapists learn how to treat neurological patients better, and how to develop their clinical reasoning, linking the evidence base literature to the practical application in rehabilitation.

Mary is highly respected by her peers. She was awarded the Fellowship of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (FCSP) for her outstanding work. Even into her final years of practice, she has been hosting popular workshops and sharing her vast clinical wisdom with the rehabilitation community around the world.
Though her brilliant mind, expert hands, and kind heart will be deeply missed in BBTA, her influence lives on. Every therapist she has trained and every student she has taught will carry her work forward.
