Kleim, J.A. and Jones, T.A. (2008) Principles of experience-dependent neural plasticity: Implications for rehabilitation after brain damage Supplement. Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research. 51:S225–S239

This is an excellent review of principles of neuroplasticity taking into account the specific elements of experience required to promote change. By understanding the basic principles of neural plasticity which govern learning in both the intact and damaged brain, identification of the critical behavioural and neurobiological signals that drive recovery can begin. Nine principles of experience-dependent plasticity were identified, namely: use it or lose it : use it and improve it : specificity : repetition : intensity : time : salience : age and transference.
