This randomized controlled trial was designed to be conducted with adult stroke patients in the sub-acute phase of stroke recovery. A six week intervention phase of mental practice embedded in physical, occupational and speech therapy sessions, was measured was designed using performance of daily activities measured using a selection of relevant and reliable outcome measures. The value of this paper is in its detail of how the mental imagery programme is constructed – there are good descriptions of combining mental practice with the overt movement, of the importance of not being too tired to practice, of keeping a log and using videos to enhance the vividness of the imagery stimulating patients to recall all sensory information such as sounds, smells, touch, pressure and taste.
This paper is a description of the planned design of the RCT before it took place in the Netherlands – the results are in the follow up study detailed below.
